Waterstradt was born on March 21, 1986, in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, to Mark and Sharon Waterstradt. He went to Redford Catholic Central High School, where he excelled in basketball. He earned many accolades and awards, such as being selected to the All-Catholic League team and the All-State team.
Waterstradt pursued his basketball career at Rutgers University, where he played for the Scarlet Knights from 2004 to 2006. He was a versatile player who could play as a power forward or a center, and he was known for his physicality, his grit, and his charm. He was fondly called “Stradt” or “Dubs” by his teammates and fans. He studied integrative studies, which showed his broad education and personality.
After two seasons at Rutgers, Waterstradt moved to Oakland University in Michigan, where he played for the Golden Grizzlies from 2007 to 2009. He was a vital part of the team’s success, helping them win two Summit League regular-season titles and one Summit League tournament title. He also played professionally in Romania for the Municipal Bucuresti team, where he demonstrated his skills as a formidable forward and center.

He married Clare Waterstradt, a prominent paramedic at Henry Ford Health, and they had two children, a son, and a daughter. His wife described him as “the best husband and father anyone could wish for”, while his children said he was “their hero and role model”.
